Reflections on the game. By Julie A, Winnie and Sara S

In the start it was confusing because we got different information’s about the game and we misunderstood each other. The Lithuanians already had a game, witch we couldn’t understand. One day we Skyped and we came up with another idea, which was a QR treasure hunt. We explained the game to the Lithuanians and talked about what we could do. We agreed to make the tasks with the formal a2 + b2 = c2. We made the game on a website, and then we uploaded it on the blog.

Another day we tested the game on the 7th graders. With the first group we had two teams, which worked well, because then there were competition as we expected. One of the teams had some troubles finding the QR codes. So maybe we shouldn’t hide them so hard, so they will do more math than looking for the QR codes. The team who did find the QR codes also made the tasks meanwhile they find the codes, which was the best idea so we have to say that to the teams in the future. In the end we made an evaluation with the group and they said it was to easy for 7th graders because all the tasks had the same formal. They also said that they didn’t speak a lot of English. Our opinion is that it is up to the students to speak English because we couldn’t keep an eye on them while they were finding the QR codes.

In the second group we tested our game on, there were some mistakes as well. We forgot to tell them that they had to write which task they solved on their paper so we could correct it.

All in one the game worked fine. What we have to remember is to say the right information’s and place the QR codes more clearly so they are easily to find.

Evaluation on our game

At the 5 of December we got our project groups. The groups are Migle, Simona, Lukas, Julie and Nicole. Later that week Tomas joined our group. We are satisfied and happy.

We made a group chat on facebook and then we started to talk about our game. The Lithuanians sent us a picture of an idea for the game and we agreed on it. The game is appropriate for 7th
graders and they would learn something new from the game. It is a board game about Pythagoras theorem; where you have to solve mathematical tasks and questions.
We came up with the idea to make a video as a logbook, the Lithuanians agreed and the danish students started making the logbook right away.

We cooperated, stayed in contact and we messaged each other frequently, (also outside the project). We used communication apps such as Facebook and Skype. We had some communication difficulties because of the time (when they had class, we had breaks.) but in the end we made our game and at last everyone participated.

The 2 of February, we had to show our game to the 7th graders. Two different groups tried our game and we helped them with some of the tasks. It was confusing at first, but when we showed them how to solve the tasks they understood it.We evaluated the game together and the pupils said, that it was educative. They learned new math phrases and they said we were good at explaining the game - and we talked english the whole time.
We think it would’ve been more fun for the 7th graders if we had made more tasks and questions, or else it was a success.

Reflection of our boardgame

Reflection of our boardgame

The Lithuanian people began to think about what game we could make before we did, so they asked us on Facebook if we had any ideas for a possible game. One idea came up and that was a relay. The group found the idea good, but because it was quit late we decided to talk with each other again another day.

Some days later, we spoke with them on Skype. After a good time of thinking and discussing, we decided to do a board game based on another board that our Lithuanian friends had found. We decided to split the work on the game up, so the Lithuanians did the physical Board and we did the small tasks that belongs to the game. That means when we arrive in Lithuania they have the board and we have the tasks for it. However, because we had to try out our game in one of the seventh graders on our school, we also needed to do a board for the game. That was not a problem and it did not take a lot of time. Through the process of making the game and doing a description of the game, we sent photos to each other via Facebook, so no one did something the other part did not like.
Then the day came where we had to learn our seventh graders the rules for our game and let them try it. The first group we helped was really good at Math, so we did not need to say much before they understood everything, but the second group we came to needed a little more help especially on the Math part.

Our game took quit a long time compared to the others group’s games and all of the tasks we made were the same kinds only with different measures. Even though the students said that it was a nice game, we think that it would have been a little more fun if the tasks were more variable, because we could sense that the students were a bit bored in the end. However, the game worked completely as it should and no mistakes came up.
If we are ever going to do a game like this again we would like to think more creative and maybe spend a little more time on the project, so it is more exciting and fun for people to play.

The work process of the game

The work process of the game.

We had a bad start onto the project, because we started working on it later than the Lithuanians did, so they had already made the game when the time came and we had to come up with ideas for the game. The Lithuanians made easy for us, because they had already made a prototype of the game, so we only had to copy it.

We had to present the game for some 7th graders, they had to try it and then they had to tell us their thoughts about it. It went very well because the game was a succes. The game was good because it gave the 7th graders a challenge, but it was not too hard for them to understand. They gave positive feedback where they told us that they like how fun the game is because it is challenging and interesting, but the game is not too difficult for the 7th graders.

Our game

Our game

We are together with Klaudija and Brigita in the study groups. We began the 5th December, where we wrote with the Lithuanians students about our game. In the beginning, we were confused, because the Lithuanians already began making the rules for our game, before we were. However, the game was not about Pythagoras, so we changed some of the rules. We did not know if we should make the game separately or together. Their teacher said that we did not have to make it together, but our teacher said that we had to make it together, so that was very frustrating.  We had no idea, how we could change the game, and we did not have a lot of time. We wrote together with the Lithuanians, we gave some ideas to change the game, and we agreed with the Lithuanians how the game should be. We made the game, and posted it on the blog with a film and the rules for our game. In the beginning of February, we showed our game to the seventh graders from our school. They played it a couple of times, and they said that it was funny and good, but it was a little fast to play. We think, it was nice to show our game to the seventh graders, and we learned a lot from it. It was a little awkward in the beginning, but after the first evaluation, it became more natural, so it was not that awkward.

Our teamwork:

It went well. However, we think, that we definitely both have communication mistakes. We were busy, because we did not have so much time to make it. We think we took too much initiative, so we finished the game they started. We think we should have let them make more of the game. That was our mistake. The Lithuanians mistake was that they were a little slowly to reply on our messages. After all, it went well, and we finished our game.

Our opinion about our game:

We think our game was a little too easy, and maybe a little boring, because it was just a puzzle. However, we thought, that we did not time had to make another game. However, it was a little difficult to gather all the triangles in to one triangle, but because the triangle was that small, there were not so many puzzle pieces, so when you first figured out how to gather the triangle, it became a little too easy. However, we think it was funny to gather the puzzle pieces into one triangle. So our opinion about the game, is arguable, we suppose.

We should have done better:

We stressed excessively, we should had thought of more ideas before we began making our game, and bin more creative.

The whole process:

The whole process was okay; we learned new things, about how not to make a game. Maybe our game was not the best, but we still learned from it. We had some problems, but we also had something that was good.

Evalutation

Evaluation
In early December, we got an assignment from our teacher, saying we have to make another math game with our study group. We did so. Us here in Denmark got other information than the pupils in Lithuania, which lead to many misunderstandings. So when we contacted them about the game, they were already started making the game, we tried our best to put in our help, even though we got an answer back saying, that they would finish the game. So we barely did anything to help them make the game, we did our best to try to help them.

So when we here in Denmark realized that we really didn’t need to help them, we just said back and waited. Even though we got a date that the game would be finished at, it got delayed by a few days. But the they finished it up and it was amazing, we could see that they worked hard on it, but again us here in Denmark did barely nothing.

We also had to post a description of the game and post it on the blog, because it got delayed a bit. We did not really have a lot time to make this, but because they made the game, we took the description on our backs and made that. Which we also did not work together on, in the study group.
Their game were made out of it wood and looks really amazing, but we also have to make a copy of the game our self, so we did. But we did not have the time or the skill to make it properly, so we made a cheap version out of paper. We were not satisfied about how the game looked, so if we could, we would make a prettier version.

We had to present and play the game with the seventh graders, it went decent, better than we expected, the different groups said pretty much the same thing, that the game was neither to hard or to easy, with a bit of our help, and that the game could be prettier.
The group worked out fine, things got made slow, but it got made. The only problem we see that the communication between the group was too bad, but here in Denmark, it worked out just fine.
